Konstantin Gorbatov
Venice
#2
Konstantin Gorbatov painted the picture Venice in 1913. The master made the work in oil paints on canvas. He created picture with wide textured strokes, which viewed from a distance merge together.

Specialists attribute the picture to art genre Veduta. The term Veduta had been coined in Venice. It means topographically accurate landscapes of the city and its environs. The artist depicted Venice architecture against the sky with transparent pink clouds. Water surface of the canal is illuminated by the sun in the foreground. Sailing ships settled down to left on the water. Houses characteristic of Venice are being stood on either side from the canal. Two curved bridges are thrown between them.

Historic center of Venice is located on 118 picturesque islands. They are divided by 150 water canals and channels. Venice is known for its narrow curved streets, on which low houses with 3 or 4 floors stand in continuous rows. Graceful gondolas, facades of palaces with delicate galleries and world famous carnival were delighting many generations of painters. Konstantin Gorbatov painted Venice more than once. In Veduta, he conveyed its moisture saturated air, particular theatrical and festive atmosphere.

Konstantin Gorbatov had been participating in exhibitions since 1905. In Russia the master frequently painted views of northern cities and created landscapes with small Volga settlements. Some old-fashioned of his paintings and high quality style provided the artist with popularity: his paintings were well selling out before the 1917 revolution. After revolution the situation worsened. By 1922, the master’s revenue had come to nought and he had left Russia with his wife.

The artist settled in Berlin in 1926 and lived there until the end of his life. He died in May 1945.

The Soviet officer, who was given Gorbatov’s apartment, handed over his will and pictures to the commandant’s office of Berlin. In the will was written:
“I am writing a letter at the tragic moment, when death is threatening everyone who lives in Berlin. I ask you send all my pictures to Imperial Academy of Arts in Leningrad after war, let it will have done as it will have seen fit”.

Gorbatov’s last will had been fulfilled.
