Oleg Klyukin painted his picture Chechen woman in 1954. Despite the fact that the master created the work in the Chechen Republic and called it Chechen woman, most probably, a Terskaya Cossack woman or a maiden of a different nation posed for him. In fact, at that period of time all Chechens were deported from their native places to Kazakhstan and Middle Asia.
The master depicted a young woman in the Chechen national festive attire. In the costumes of Chechen and Ingush women gold and silver jewelry played an instrumental role. The gala dress on the picture is decorated with metal chest-type fasteners and a belt. On the model’s head is a transparent white scarf. The woman’s eyes are focused straight on a spectator. The master left the background of the picture neutral – thus he drew attention to the heroine.
In the collection of the National Museum of the Chechen Republic there are two more works of the author with the identical title. He painted three pictures Chechen woman at different time periods. Other images of Chechen women bear no resemblance with the heroine of this canvas. The maidens from other canvasses are dressed not in national costumes, but in the costumes according to the fashion of the Soviet epoch.
Oleg Klyukin resided in the Chechen Republic from 1952 through 1965. He was seconded to Grozny after his studies. The artist’s workshop was next to the square Minutka. In the Chechen Republic the artist worked on creation of a composite picture for Grozny Museum of Local History. At that period he painted many of his works. On his canvasses appeared tiny mountain villages and gigantic glaciers, multiple types of mountains and rivers. A collection of the artist’s paintings is kept with the holdings of the National Museum of the Chechen Republic. The majority of them are painted in the mountains of Chechnya and in the city of Grozny. Also the artist painted pictures in the mountain villages of Ingushetia, on the shores of the Caspian, in Moscow region and in Volga region.
Moscow charitable foundation of Elena and Gennady Timchenko gifted the picture Chechen woman to the Museum in 2017. In total, the foundation contributed 144 pieces of art, of which 49 refer to Klyukin, to the Museum. These canvasses are especially important for the National Museum of the Chechen Republic. Indeed, the pictures that were painted in these places returned to Grozny. These works are an integral part of the history of the region’s art life.
