Promissory note is the first and only security asset that can be issued by an ordinary person. Promissory note (after the German word Wechsel, meaning “exchange, barter”) is a financing instrument in which one party promises in writing to pay another party a certain amount of money, either upon the latter’s request of on a specified date. The main economic function of a promissory note is to give credit. It can formalize many credit obligations, such as payment for goods or services, repayment of a received loan, granting a credit, providing security for a loan and others. A promissory note is of particular importance in terms of this function for the buyer, as it gives him the opportunity to receive a loan from the seller without the mediation of banks and other financial institutions.
