Andrey Udodov
In the estate of P.P. Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky

Artist Andrey Udodov is the author of the project of the first exhibition of the P. P. Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky Manor Museum, which was realized in 1997. In the course of his work, he painted several landscapes in and around the estate park and donated to the museum’s collection the painting ‘At the Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky Estate’.

It depicts part of the park with the main estate house. In the foreground of the picture on the right you can see one of the oldest trees of the estate park — a Siberian cedar. According to a legend popular in this area, it was planted by Pyotr Semyonov himself in his youth in memory of his love for his first wife, Vera Chulkova, who passed away soon after giving birth.

The ‘Ryazanka’ estate is located on the border of Lipetsk and Ryazan regions. Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky was born and grew up here, he left his ancestral home only in 1841. The estate was founded in the late 18th century. In his memoirs Peter Semenov described it as follows:

While planning the estate my father was inspired by estates in southern France. The spacious ground floor was made of stone (brick) and was intended not so much for service rooms (kitchen, laundry) as for living quarters for the servants. <…> An extensive conservatory was added to the south side of the house, opposite the river. The spacious mezzanine consisted of six guest rooms on either side of the corridor. The entire right side of the wooded ravine between it and the new estate was converted into a garden of English design, which my father was particularly captivated by during his stay in England and for which groups of forest trees were first planted by my father in our area.

There is a park around the house. Today it is considered one of the oldest in the Lipetsk region and the richest in species of trees and shrubs. There are more than 110 species, half of which are exotic plants brought by the owner from different parts of the world

Andrei Udodov, the author of the painting, has lived in Lipetsk since childhood. He graduated from the Orlov Art School in 1985, after which he worked for 14 years as an artist at the Lipetsk Commercial Advertising Company. From 1997 to 2006 he was head of restoration department in the Lipetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore and formed exhibitions in many regional museums. Among his works are many canvases with historical interiors and architectural monuments.
