Vuillard explored a limited number of topics in his art, but his interpretations of scenes from real life and motifs were always original and emotional. In the beginning Vuillard preferred painting interiors, and later he added female characters into his art works. The study “At the window” shows a woman leaning on the armrest of a sofa. The motif, interpretation, and format of the sketch are similar to choices Vuillard made in his series of interiors with people that he painted in the early 20th century. The exquisite pinkish-silver palette dominating this painting also seems to be Vuillard’s favorite. The intimate atmosphere is created by the harmony of muted, vibrating, lookalike colors applied with separate strokes, as well as the rhythmically expressive silhouette of the woman and the interior decoration.
