Andre Lhote, who started his career as a sculptor, dedicated himself to painting in 1906. He is also well known as an art critic and the author of essays about painting, as well as articles about Camille Corot, Pierre Bonnard, and Paul Cézanne. Lhote’s early works were influenced by Gaugin. Later, he took part in exhibitions together with fauvists, but it was Cezanne’s art that made the biggest impression on him. After some time, Lhote became acquainted with the cubist tradition, although he did not accept it entirely. His art is a kind of compromise between strict cubist rules and an image of reality. Despite the demonstrative exposure of volumes, patterning, and geometric forms, the artist still maintained contact with reality: trees and buildings can be easily recognized in his paintings. Critical of cubists for undervaluing color, Lhote saturates the painting space with bright red, blue, and green colors.
