Vuillard did most of his small sketches depicting a living room and a door between 1890 and 1893. This piece is also dated to this period. The small composition belongs to a series of minor interior paintings. The painter made this series with an intent to achieve, in accordance with the theoretical pillars of the “Nabi” art group, absolute color harmony and the natural integration of portrayed objects in the plane. The white door with glass upper sections and a big black knob is the centerpiece of the composition. In his art works Vuillard used doors as a motif to neutralize the depth of the interior and link all of its components to a single light-colored plane. The closed white door in Vuillard’s painting seems to fracture at an angle, producing an illusion of two overlapping planes. The red ornament on the sofa fabric makes the main color statement; it also intensifies the feeling that the scene is two-dimensional.
