Yury Tanygin is a well-known ethnofuturist in the Finno-Ugric world. His works are known far beyond the borders of his native Mari El Republic. Currently the artist lives and works in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Tanygin intertwines two cultures in his work, the Mari and Khanty cultures. Yury Tanygin entered the cultural life of the Mari El Republic as an active participant in one of the landmark events: in June 1990, an exhibition of young Finno-Ugric artists and artisans was successfully held in Yoshkar-Ola, where his works were presented for the first time. Nowadays, the artist’s paintings are kept in the Republican Museum of Fine Arts and in private collections in Russia, Estonia, Finland, and Hungary.

The myth, which Yury Tanygin creates, unfolds into an epic narrative, the main character of which is a cultural hero — a golden-bronze figure resembling an ancient amulet, the defender and savior of the people. The stories about the artist’s childhood and youth which he shares on the canvases “Lullaby”, “Bear’s Nest”, “Daughter of the Moon”, and “For Marriage” are wonderful. Yury Tanygin’s ethnofuturism is distinguished by a feeling of serene happiness and an interweaving of the personal and the national.
The painting “For Marriage” is one of the central ones in Yury Tanygin’s art. The painter believes that it brings happiness. A few months after completing it, he found his love and got married. The canvas is largely biographical: not a single talented person can glide on the wings of creativity if love does not live in their soul.
The image of the red bird is often found in the works of Yury Tanygin. It is an embodiment of the soul, a guardian, and a link between the past and the future. The depicted bird is a symbol of happiness and at the same time a powerful amulet for this happiness that protects it from evil forces. The bird’s connection with the artist’s native Finno-Ugric culture is emphasized by the image of large, bright scarlet duck paws and figures of people dressed in clothes of national colors watching the hero.
