Alexei Egorov painted ‘The Holy Family’ in 1850. On the left the artist portrayed Virgin Mary holding the Christ child, on the right — her sister Elizabeth with John the Baptist child. Bending towards them from above is Joseph, Mary’s husband.
The artist was inspired in his works by the tradition of classicism: harmonious drawing, balanced composition, sculptured human figures. Egorov had a profound knowledge of the anatomy of human body. He rendered with scientific accuracy the location of muscles and joints. The legend has it that professor Buyalsky, the famous surgeon of the XIX century, used to take his students to museums to search for mistakes in the works of artists — and named as anatomically faultless only Egorov’s painting ‘Torture of the Savior’.
