The ‘St. Nicholas Cathedral’ painting from the Valuy Museum of Historical and Art collection was created by the artist Olga Sorokina during the 15th Belgorod International Slavic plein air ‘Sukharevo-2014’.
The artist was born in the city of Orel in 1969. After graduating from the Orel Art school, she entered the Kharkov Art and Industrial Institute, and then the Kiev Academy of Arts. In 1998, Olga Sorokina became a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. After that, she began teaching at the Orel Art school and also continued her painting activity.
Olga Sorokina is a master of portrait and landscape. A distinctive feature of her works is branded broad strokes of bright and rich colors. Sorokina is an experimental artist who prefers to work from nature. She constantly participates in plein-airs and creative trips, corresponding to the author’s inner world, as bright and emotional. Olga Sorokina is inspired by the architecture and historical heritage of her native city. Her works are awarded diplomas of the Union of Artists of Russia, a third-degree diploma, and a second-degree diploma. Sorokina’s works can be seen in the Belgorod State Art Museum, in the Victoria Art Gallery collection in Kiev, the Orel local, regional museum, private collections in Germany, Canada, and the United States.
In ‘St. Nicholas Cathedral’, Olga Sorokina depicted urban architecture. Broad and textured brushstrokes scatter light throughout the canvas and simultaneously focus both in general and in detail. This work shows dynamism, which is the main feature of Sorokina’s painting. The study is made in a bold pictorial solution.
Olga Sorokina participated in the 15th Belgorod International Slavic plein air ‘Sukharevo-2014’, held on the Valuy district’s territory from August 15 to August 28, 2014. Artists from Belgorod, Kursk, Orel, Lipetsk, Kostroma, and Sergiev Posad (Russia), Kharkiv (Ukraine), and NIS (Serbia) also took part in it. The delegation was headed by Yuri Chernyshev, a member of the Board of the Belgorod branch of the Union of Artists of Russia. After the final plein-air exhibition, the artist donated the “St. Nicholas Cathedral” painting to the Valuy Museum of History and Art.

The smooth composition, which rests on the upper edge of the canvas, emphasizes the grandeur of the building. The painting seems to radiate warmth and sunlight. It permeates the author’s cheerfulness and conveys a sense of joyful amazement with the surrounding world.
