The Sami traditional art is a distinctive phenomenon, which is represented by a variety of crafts: embroidery with beads and tin thread, knitting, weaving, working with fur, leather, suede, cloth, carving on wood, burl, horn, birch bark as well as root weaving.

The methodical manual “Sami Handicraft” by Ekaterina Mechkina and Anastasia Mozolevskaya notes that Sami people decorated their household items,

#6

In ancient times Sami people decorated almost all kinds of things with patterns: traditional costume — headdresses, belts, sashes, mittens, gaiters, boot straps, footwear and household items — tableware, interior items, cradles, women’s handbags, leather bags, cases for storing small things, needle cases. Patterns were used to adorn such household tools as knives, spindle whorls, spinners, spindles, beaters and others; fishing tools — knitting needles, floats for seine and others; forestry and hunting implements — devices for stripping bark from trees, powder pots, hunting bags, gun covers and others (the ethnographer Anna Kosmenko).

Sami people use bugles, beads, braid, reindeer fur to embroider many items and products used in everyday life. One of such items is a kisa bag. It is used for storing needlework.

The Sami kisa bag is quite soft; it is made of reindeer fur or reindeer tanned leather and closes with a running through cord or braid. The front and back parts of the bag are semi-oval in shape. The oval side part is pleated making the bag larger.

Such bags can be decorated with beaded embroidery or appliqué. Geometric design is a characteristic feature of the Sami decorative patterns. There are three types of them: 1) a rhombus and a quarter; 2) triangles and zigzags; 3) a circle, a rosette, a star, and a cross.

The bag displayed in the Murmansk Museum of Local History is rectangular. It is decorated with geometric patterns in the style of Sami decorative and applied art. Reindeer skin, reindeer fur, red and blue cloth were used to make it.
