Among the museum collections of the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local History in the capital of the Polar Region feature the exhibits of special importance reflecting the life and applied arts of the Sami — the first historically known people to settle on the Kola Peninsula since ancient times.
The exhibition presents tools, cultural and household items of the Sami people, products made of reindeer fur and leather, wood and birch bark, colored cloth embroidered with beads.
The collection was formed mainly in the 1950s–1960s, although certain exhibits arrived earlier.
Pechok, yupa, kangi, malitsa
and sovik — all these items of clothing immerse visitors in the history of the
Kola North, in the history of the Sami, give them an idea of how these people
used to look and what their interests were. The items were collected during
expeditions to the Kola Peninsula, as well as donated and purchased from Kola
Peninsula residents.
