The Churapchinsky furniture collection includes various cabinets, benches and tables.
Furniture making was an important part of Sakha folk art. Living far away from the rest of the world, the Yakuts had to produce everything they needed for their everyday life using their own resources and skills.
A “sandaly” in ancient Sakha culture was a low table made of planks or birch bark.
There were different types of sandaly. For example, there was a birch bark table top without legs. It had a circular shape with a diameter of one meter. The whole circle consisted of four separate parts, which were fastened with thin hair ropes or cords so that it could be folded into one fourth part. The attachment to such a birch-bark circle was square-shaped laths fastened crosswise to each other with wooden rods.
There was also another kind of wooden furniture — “mas-sandaly”. It was also a low table with a round top on four legs. The mas-sandaly were used to put hot vats with meat and kettles on them, so they were often located near the hearth.
Another option is a low table with a round or quadrangular table top on high supports shaped like hooves.
The desk from the collection of the Churapchinsky Museum named after the ethnographer Andrey Savvin was made by the carpenter, master of wood and mammoth tusk carving Pyotr Ivanovich Popov — Bolobuochuya Buotur. He came from the first Khayakhsyt settlement, which was later renamed Arylakh legacy.
The desk has a rather complex shape. The table top and its base are mirror images of each other. The sculptured supports feature the conventional contours of horse legs.
Among the exhibits is also a choron, or the national Yakut vessel for storing koumiss, on three hoofed legs, and a konkoloy funnel for the koumiss vessel, the silhouette of which repeats this motif.
The base for writing is made in the form of a large
box, which is decorated in the center with a carved petal rosette with a
spherical cone. The design of the piece has elements that were influenced by
the appearance of imported factory items. Nevertheless, the artisan preserved
the traditional look, which in this case is manifested in the form of the
supports with the contours of horse legs.
