In spring 1886, the writer DmItry Grigorovich whose picture is in the top left corner of the display panel, sent a letter to Anton Chekhov. A legendary for the writer man told him: ‘You have a real talent, the talent that pushes you far ahead of other writers of the new generation’. Grogorovich made that conclusion upon reading a collection of Chekhov’s “Motley Stories”. It was the second book by Chekhov. The cover for the book was designed by artist FyOdor Shekhtel. Next to it on the stand there is a picture of the writer taken in 1888.

The book was valued high by others, too. The writer was awarded Pushkin prize for that collection of stories “At Dusk”. That prize was awarded by the Academy of Science for the best piece of fiction with excellent aesthetic merits. It was the first recognition of Chekhov’s talent.

The picture in the frame is a playbill. In October 1887, Chekhov wrote to his brother Alexander: ‘I wrote the play unexpectedly, after a conversation with Korsh. I went to bed, thought of a subject, and put it in writing. It took 2 weeks, or, to be more correct, 10 days’. In the theatre, the play was met with admiration, both by the actor Vladimir Davydov whom Chekhov wanted to act as Ivanov, and by Korsh himself. But at the very first rehearsals it became clear that the actors failed to understand the play. Chekhov wrote to his brother:
