Chekhov’s health kept aggravating despite the Yalta climate. His permanent medical doctor in Yalta, Isaac Altshuller, wrote in his memoires that in 1904 the progress of the disease became especially rapid. “Moments of good temper were rare, and with ever increasing frequency, I saw him sitting lonely in an arm-chair or in a beachchair position on the sofa, with his eyes closed, without a usual book in his hands. He was very concerned about the war that began then. He could work little at that time, by bits and starts, though the plans were many, and he was sorry about that”.

“The weather in Yalta is warm like in March. People were loudly discussing the war issues in the street. Everybody is feeling cheerful, in festive mood, and if the same remains tomorrow, a week later, a month later, it will turn out badly for the Japanese”,
– Chekhov wrote in one of his letters.

1 May 1904, Chekhov went from Yalta to Sebastopol, and from there to Moscow, by train. “Farewell. I”m going away to die…Give my love to my friends… Wish them happiness and success on my behalf. We”ll never see each other again, “ – he said to his friend, the writer Nikolay TeleshOv before the departure. The doctors sent him abroad, to Berlin, to consult a famous medical doctor Ewald regarding the future treatment schedule. 5 May Chekhov went to Berlin together with his wife Olga Knipper. Ewald sent him to Badenweiler, a resort place in Schwarzwald. They arrived there 9 or 10 June and stayed in the “Sommer” hotel. Chekhov was attended by a German medical doctor Schwerer. Chekhov described him as follows: “I”m attended here by a good doctor, smart and knowledgeable”.
27 June the heart activity got depressed, the second attack on 28 June was stronger. By evening on 1 July he felt better. He wondered why Olga was not going to have dinner. The wife answered that the gong had not sounded. As it turned out later, they missed the sound, and Chekhov started writing a short story describing “a very fashionable resort place with many fat bankers, healthy red-cheeked food lovers –Englishmen, Americans, all of them coming back from an excursion, or form a walk or a ride – from everywhere, get together dreaming of a delicious and substantial meal after a physical exercise. And it suddenly turns out that the cook escaped and no dinner is available, and how that blow to the stomach impacted all those spoiled people”. Olga laughed at it heartily having no idea that several hours later Chekhov was going to depart this life. 2 July 1904, at three o’clock a.m., the great Russian writer died.
