In Yalta, like in MElikhovo, Chekhov did not only practice medicine but was also working in public education sector. ‘I’m already involved in public life here, — he wrote in 1898, — I am appointed a member of the Oversight Council of a girl’s school’. As told by a Yalta reporter Beschinsky, Chekhov was very well aware of the school issues and recognized the national significance of education: ‘The state will fall apart like a house made of poorly fired brick without a broad public education’.
The picture in the frame is a drawing by the writer’s nephew, Sergey Chekhov – “Yalta High School”. In the right bottom corner of the stand there is an old post card showing the building of Yalta Girl’s School. Under the frame there is a quotation: ‘School is my refuge’. Chekhov was a good friend of the school director, Varvara Kharkeevich.
An instance is known when a village teacher from Mukhalatka located far away from Yalta, came on foot to Chekhov to tell him that the school constructed with the writer’s financial assistance was about to be closed through the absence of funds to maintain it. Chekhov, upon hearing that, opened a drawer and gave to the teacher all the money he had available at that moment – 500 roubles. The school in Mukhalatka was saved.
