9 September 1898, Chekhov attended the rehearsal of his play ‘The Seagull’ in MKT (EmKhaTe). There he met young theatre actors, including Olga Knipper who celebrated her 30th anniversary on that day. Five days later Chekhov attended the full-dress rehearsal of ‘Czar Fyodor Ioannovich’. Later, sharing his impressions, Chekhov wrote to Alexey Suvorin:

12 April 1899, Chekhov again came to Moscow and 18 April, on the first day of the Easter, he paid an unscheduled visit on Knipper. Later they went to an art exhibition to see the new pictures by Levitan. Starting in summer 1899, the playwright and the actress held correspondence that lasted, with intervals, until spring 1904. There are 433 letters and telegrams of Chekhov to Knipper available, and over 400 letters of Knipper to Chekhov – the largest Chekhov’s correspondence in terms of volume.
In summer 1900, MKT came on its first tour to the Crimea where Chekhov lived at that time. Olga was lodged in his home, and the couple no longer concealed their affair. In Yalta they spent six weeks together. And 25 May 1901, Chekhov and Knipper went through a service of marriage in the church of Exaltation of the Holy and Life-giving Cross in VozdvIzhensky lane, PlyuschIkha district of Moscow. Chekhov sent a telegram to his mother: “Dear mommy, bless my marriage. Everything will remain unchanged”.
Right after the wedding Olga took her husband to the UfA governorate (Bashkiria)— the local koumiss (mare’s milk) was believed to cure pulmonary tuberculosis. The spouses were separated for several months in a row, as Olga was acting in the theatre and spent most time in Moscow while Chekhov had to stay in Yalta following the doctors’ recommendations. The separations were painful for both. Chekhov wrote to the wife: “…I”ve told you 10 000 times and will keep saying for a long time that I love you –and that”s all of it. And if we are not together now, it”s not my fault, nor yours, but of the devil who sent bacilli upon me and put love for art into you”. “…if you stayed with me in Yalta over the winter, your life would be spoiled and I would be tormented with remorse, and that would hardly be better…”. She accused herself of his torments and wrote: “…ruining my life would have an impact on everything and would press upon him. He would never agree to my voluntary termination on the service in the theatre …”.
