Anton Chekhov graduated from Moscow State University in 1884. In the top left corner of the board there are the pictures of the medical college graduates (Chekhov’s photo is highlighted). But 1884 was memorable for Chekhov not only as the year graduated but also as the year of publication of his first story-book called “Fairy-tales of Melpomene”. The writer said: “Pursuing medical science influenced significantly my literary activities, they expanded the area of my observations, fertilized me with knowledge”.
Chekhov started practising medicine while at the university. In 1879, his brother Ivan obtained the position of a teacher in the city of Voskresensk near Moscow. The Chekhovs came to live there in summer. It was there that Anton Chekhov got acquainted with Pavel Arkhangelsky, director of Voskresensk hospital. Since 1882, he assisted the doctors receiving patients in the hospital, and in mid-summer 1884 he deputized for the administrator of ZvenIigorod zemsky (local) hospital during the adsministrrator’s leave.
