This sketch was made in February 1936 in Nice in the studio on Charles Felix Square. During this period, Matisse drew and painted this model in his studio many times. He made this study on plywood in oil using quick and energetic brush strokes. The dynamic movement of his hand creates tight shapes, and the bright splashes of color strengthen the emotionality of this study. According to the inscription on the back of the painting, Matisse gave it to Lidiya Delektorskaya, who handed it over to the Museum in Moscow.
