Tchaikovsky’s visit to his house was a significant event for Chekhov. The writer’s family rented a Moscow mansion on Sadovo-Kudrinskaya Street at that time. These were the years when Chekhov was just beginning his path to fame in literature, while Tchaikovsky was already a recognized authority in music. Anton Pavlovich gave prominence to the oeuvre of the famous composer.
The geniuses first met in 1888, in the house of the playwright and libretto writer Modest Ilyich, the composer’s brother. Chekhov was captivated by the simplicity of the renowned author of ‘The Swan Lake’. After meeting, the writer described Tchaikovsky as follows: ‘A good man and does not look like a demigod.’ And by the time of the first meeting with Chekhov, the composer already knew the writer in absentia from his literary activities. In a private conversation, Tchaikovsky spoke of Anton Pavlovich as the future pillar of Russian lore.
