Chekhov A.P.
The book ‘The three Sisters’
#2
Chekhov wrote ‘The three Sisters’ in 1900, fulfilling the order of the Moscow Art Theater. The idea was based on the desire of Anton Pavlovich to create a play where the characters will be painted specifically for the actors and actresses of the Moscow Art Theater. Chekhov saw his future wife Olga Leonardovna Knipper as the performer of the Masha’s role. The author executed the main part of the work on the play in the summer and autumn of 1900 in Yalta and Gurzuf. And already by the end of October he sent the finished material to the Moscow Art Theater.

The premiere performance, staged by Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko, was set on January 31, 1901. Chekhov hadn’t attended the premiere. He was vacationing in Nice, but closely followed the details in letters and newspaper articles. Olga Leonardovna wrote to her husband: ‘All over Moscow there is a talk only about “The three Sisters”. In short, Chekhov’s and our theatre’s success’. Masha is considered one of the largest roles of the actress.

Poster of the first performance of ‘The three Sisters’

The framed poster on the stand is a copy of the original announcing the premiere of ‘The three Sisters’ at the Moscow Art Theater, then the Moscow Public Art Theater. The poster indicates that tickets were sold out before the day of the premiere. The cast was as follows: Olga Knipper (Masha), Margarita Savitskaya (Olga), Maria Andreeva (Irina), Alexander Artyom (Chebutykin), Konstantin Stanislavsky (Vershinin), Vsevolod Meyerhold (Tuzenbach), Maria Lilina (Natasha). Anton Pavlovich created the character of Baron Tuzenbach specially for Vsevolod Meyerhold. The young actor was deeply sympathetic to him.

When the Moscow Art Theater came to Crimea, the artist lived at Anton Pavlovich’s Yalta dacha for the entire period of the tour. In the future, they constantly corresponded. Chekhov was interested in the actor’s creative life until his death. In addition to Tuzenbach, Vsevolod Emilievich was the first in history to play Treplev from ‘The Seagull’ on stage. Unfortunately, Meyerhold did not participate in new performances based on Chekhov’s plays. After lengthy disputes with Konstantin Sergeevich Stanislavsky, he left the Moscow Art Theater, and the role of Tuzenbach passed to Vasily Ivanovich Kachalov, who performed it in subsequent productions of “The three Sisters”.

The play “The three Sisters” was first published in the magazine “Russian Thought” No. 2, 1901. Several magazines fought for the right to print it, but Chekhov himself chose “Russian Thought”. With changes and amendments, it was again published in the same year as a separate edition in the publishing house of Marks.
