Evgeny Ryabinsky
Chernyanovsky choir
#17
Tambov artist Evgeny Ryabinsky created the Group portrait of the Chernyanovsky Folklore Choir in 1972. He worked on the painting for two years. In December 1978, the painting entered the Tambov Regional Ethnography Museum.

The painting depicts a rehearsal of the Chernyanovsky folk choir. The singers, elderly women, are sitting in a semicircle in one of the rooms of a village house. The soloist of the choir stands in the center, with a handkerchief in her hand. The composition of the picture is read from left to right and, according to the artist’s idea, it is structured to include the viewer in the narrative; there is even a vacant chair for the viewer near one of the chorus singers. Behind the choir participants, Ryabinsky portrayed several young women who are listening without participating in the rehearsal. In the background, we can see a window with a winter landscape.

The painting was created in an impressionistic style, with small brushstrokes. It does not feature any clear contours. The women are dressed in folk costumes, wearing long and wide skirts made of checkered woolen fabric, colorful head scarves, homespun cloth shirts, and necklaces made of large beads. Using cheerful and vibrant colors, Ryabinsky tried to reflect the contrast with the reverses of fortune of the women depicted. Each of them lost a son, a husband or a close relative during the World War II.

In those years, the women of Chernyanoye, exhausted with hard work and grief, gathered together in the evenings, sewed and knitted, read letters and “killed in action” notices, and cried. One day, to get a respite from hardships, they started singing an old song in polyphony, with voice modulations. Since then, they sang every evening and in between work. After the war, the widows pursued their hobby: they learned new songs and started visiting other villages with concerts. So the folklore group of the Chernyanovsky choir appeared. The choir practice sessions were organized by schoolteacher Catherine Rak.

The People’s Amateur Choir appeared in the village of Chernyanoye in the Tambov district in 1919. It was initiated by rural teacher Ilya Zagumennov. In 1976, the choir became a laureate of the All-Russia Festival of Folk Art. In 1994, Chernyanovsky Choir was named after People’s Artist of the USSR Maria Mordasova, one of the most famous members of the choir. Today, the choir is actively performing.
