Tambov artist Evgeny Ryabinsky created the Group portrait of the Chernyanovsky Folklore Choir in 1972. He worked on the painting for two years. In December 1978, the painting entered the Tambov Regional Ethnography Museum.
The painting depicts a rehearsal of the Chernyanovsky folk choir. The singers, elderly women, are sitting in a semicircle in one of the rooms of a village house. The soloist of the choir stands in the center, with a handkerchief in her hand. The composition of the picture is read from left to right and, according to the artist’s idea, it is structured to include the viewer in the narrative; there is even a vacant chair for the viewer near one of the chorus singers. Behind the choir participants, Ryabinsky portrayed several young women who are listening without participating in the rehearsal. In the background, we can see a window with a winter landscape.
