The collection of the Urazovo Local History Museum contains a rushnik — an item of folk culture and creativity of the Slavs.

Ornaments and symbols embroidered on the rushnik carried a special meaning and deep meaning. Its white color has always been associated with purity, purification, sacredness, goodness, protection from everything bad. Rushnik was used in everyday life and often to decorate the interior of housing. It was used to hang the window ‘from evil spirits’ when they consecrated a village house or celebrated a commemoration, hung the corners of a village house — ‘so that the evil spirits would not hide anywhere’. A long rushnik was also hung over the doors to protect the house.

Rushnik played a special role in ancient wedding ceremonies. Each girl prepared them for herself, like the rest of the dowry, in advance. During the wedding, the hands of a newly wedded couple were tied with some rushnik, while wishing them mutual understanding, a happy and long marital journey. At the wedding, meeting a newly wedded couple, the way from the threshold to the table and sometimes from the gate to the door of the village house was covered with the rushnik. Also, a rushnik was laid in front of the entrance. But the most important was the rushnik, on which the parents blessed a newly wedded couple. Such a rushnik is a special shrine that was not shown to strangers and was cherished, passed on from generation to generation.

Since ancient times, bread and rushnik have been paired. The symbolism of the bread demanded a respectful attitude towards it and it was impossible for it to lie on a ‘bare’ table not covered with a rushnik. Wedding bread — a loaf, cones, rolls — was also placed on the table, also covered with a rushnik.
