Fyodor Rokotov
Male portrait
#9
Among the portraitists of the 18th century, three are especially distinguished - Dmitry Grigoryevich Levitsky, Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov and Vladimir Lukich Borovikovsky. Their paintings reflect all the outstanding figures of the 18th century, family dynasties and the imperial house, as well as many aristocrats whose names have not reached our time.

Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov embodied in his art the ideal of a man of his era, which had developed among the Russian clerisy and attracted with its spiritual content. The viewer, standing in front of his portraits, involuntarily enters into emotional contact with those depicted on the canvas. This distinguishes Fyodor Rokotov from other portrait painters of the 18th century.

The artist has repeatedly visited the Penza province, where he stayed at the Struysky estate, with which he had long and close relations. In Ruzayevka, in the house of Nikolai Struisky, there were many Rokotovsky’s portraits of the estate owners themselves, their relatives and friends. The letters of praise of Nikolai Struisky to Fedor Rokotov have also been preserved.

Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov (1735–1808). Portrait of Alexandra Petrovna Struiskaya. Oil on canvas. 1772. State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow
Rokotov’s famous portrait of Alexandra Petrovna Struiskaya is called the ‘Russian Mona Lisa’. By the standards of the late 18th century A.P. Struiskaya was unusually beautiful and considered a model of spiritual perfection. In her portrait, the artist managed to convey this external and internal beauty. Critics noted that in many portraits of Fyodor Rokotov there is some ambiguity and mystery. It is also present here.

The work of Fyodor Rokotov can be divided into two periods - St. Petersburg’s, which was dedicated to the ceremonial and chamber portraits, and Moscow - when the master turned to a lyrical, intimate image.

Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov (1735–1808). Male portrait. 1780s. Oil on canvas. Penza Picture Gallery named after K.A. Savitsky.
The portrait of an unknown man in the Penza Art Gallery dates back to the Moscow period. He often used the oval shape of the paintings for female portraits, but there were also male ones.

From the “Male Portrait” a young handsome military man in uniform with a St. George’s Cross of the IV degree on a lapel looks at the viewer. His face with a high clean forehead, animated by a light ‘rokotovsky’s’ half-smile, is noble and full of dignity. The open brown eyes and large facial features testify to the strong-willed character of this person.

The last known works of Fyodor Rokotov date back to the 1790s. In the next almost twenty years, the artist lived in isolation and did not created. Historians suggest that this is due to impaired vision.
