De Vlaminck’s artworks from the 1920-1930s, including the “Landscape at Auvers, " are usually dramatic and emotional. During this period the painter preferred living in the country, a bit closer to nature. He loved driving and cycling, and he painted this type of landscape during his journeys. “You don’t flirt with nature, you own it, " he said. One of the motifs quite typical for his artworks from this period is a street or road going into the distance with houses on the roadside. The buildings seem to be beaten into the ground. The dark plaster and gaping black holes of windows suggest that the houses might be abandoned. “Landscape at Auvers” was painted in the summer, but the greens do not look fresh and bright. They seem to have either a yellow-reddish or blue shade. Only the bright roof in the distance livens up the palette and reminds us that Maurice de Vlaminck was once a fauvist.
