Russian Broom
#11
The Russian broom belongs to the legume family. There are about 50 species in total.
#3
It grows in Eastern Europe, the Trans-Caucasian region and Kazakhstan. In Russia, it can be found in the North Caucasus, south of Western Siberia and the central regions. The broom prefers dry pine forests, steppes and steppe slopes, forest edges and clearings.
#5
Places where the broom can be found are mentioned in a short story by Soviet writer Yuri Kazakov, A Quiet Morning:
‘They climbed the hill, turned right, went downhill through a hollow and along a path through a flax field, and then a river suddenly appeared in front of them. It was small, densely overgrown with broom and willow on the banks <…> “.

In the Slavic mythology, the broom was a symbol of prosperity and liberation from everything that was not needed. Our ancestors believed that the broom protected against ill fate and envious people. Often, broom shrubs were used in the heraldry of different countries as a symbol of strength and perseverance, as, for example, in the medieval family crest of the founder of the French royal dynasty, the Plantagenets. The broom is also the national flower of the US state of Kentucky.

The Russian broom is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to two meters high. Its branches have gray or gray-brown crowns. The plant begins to blossom in late May or early June, and later again in August or September. During abundant flowering in summer, it resembles a golden ball and has a barely noticeable pleasant smell. Its fruit ripen in September and are oblong, flat and breaking beans up to three centimeters long. Inside the bean there are oval, shiny yellowish seeds.
#8
The broom is an excellent honey plant. You can get from 50 to 350 kilograms of honey per hectare depending on the place of its growth and weather conditions.
#9
In the early 18th century, broom plants were used to create parks. Today, landscape designers also like small spherical shrubs. The broom is undemanding and feels well in different climates from severe Siberian winters to hot temperatures in the southern regions.
