The clubmoss family is one of the most ancient plants on our Earth. The family originated about 400 million years ago in the Devonian period. In the Carboniferous period, 300-360 million years ago, plants distributed over a considerable extent. Massive tree-like ground cedars reached a height of 35 meters. They formed forests and together with ferns were the main plants on the planet.

Leaves of ground cedar are fused with each other and with the stem. In five years after planting, it starts to develop spores located on its leaves. Early June spores ripen. They contain up to 50 per cent of non-drying oil, proteins, sugar, mineral salts.
Some species of the clubmoss family are used in medicine, cosmetology, and landscape design. People call clubmoss zelenika (green) as in ancient times it was used to produce a paint of this color.

In ancient times clubmoss powder was used to set on fire. In 1906, the historian Sergey Nepein wrote in his book Vologda Now and Then, ‘"ackeys increased the flame by lighting inside a lot of candles and adding clubmoss powder to the fireplace that flared up like gunpowder’. Spores are also used in metal industry. While burning, they produce an insulating layer of gas that prevents manufactured goods from adhering to each other and secures their smooth surface. Besides, spores of clubmoss are sometimes added to Bengal lights.
