The composition ‘At your right hand is the royal bride…’ or the Tsarist Deesis illustrates the lines of Psalm 45 (the number in Orthodox tradition is 44): ‘…at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir….’. The throne image of the Savior, in the image of which the features of the Tsar and the Great Bishop are combined, are waiting in prayer for the Virgin in royal robes, John the Baptist and the archangels. The iconography of the scene has developed in the Byzantine art of the 14th–15th centuries. It is based on the idea of the mystical marriage of Jesus Christ and the Church.
