The portrait of the 1840s depicts a young man with a ruddy face: slightly curly hair, a lively gaze of almond-shaped dark blue eyes, a straight short nose, a barely noticeable moustache above the upper lip. This is how an unknown artist portrayed the Murom bourgeois Vasily Rusakov.
Rusakov poses in a tailcoat, on his chest, there is a crisp snow-white insert — a shirt-front, a dark necktie is tied around his neck. In his right hand, he holds a half-closed book volume in a leather binding with a red edge. With two fingers, Rusakov holds the pages, as if he had just been reading before the painter came. Behind him is the oval back of a chair.
The name Rusakov was one of the most famous in the city of Murom and the district. The exact date of birth of Vasily Rusakov is unknown. However, it is known that he received home education, which included training in counting, reading and writing.
Rusakov began his career in the Murom register office as a scrivener. Thanks to diligence, hard work, and politeness, Rusakov got in good with his superiors and rather successfully moved up the career ladder. Two years after employment, in 1834, he became an employee of the archive — an archivist. In 1835, he was appointed as a police officer of civil and criminal cases: in this position, he was in charge of industrial affairs. Then, in the position of a debit-credit person, Rusakov was in charge of storing and counting money and supplies of the city treasury. And in 1836, he became a broker in the city of Murom — an intermediary in the conclusion of commercial transactions.
In 1838, Rusakov was approved as a treasurer of the Murom guardianship committee of prisons. His track record read:
