The Kotovsk People’s Theater is named after Alexander Baturov. He headed the theatre from 1970 to 2002, after graduating from the Leningrad Higher Trade Union School of Culture. The title of the People’s Theater was awarded in 1973, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the USSR formation. In 1977, the year of the 60th anniversary of the Great October Revolution, the theater won the award of the first All-Union festival of amateur artistic creativity of workers.
The portrait of an actress of this theater, Yuliya Tomina, was painted by Kotovsk artist Alexander Belyakin in 1965. She was a friend of the Belyakin family, and the painter attended all the performances and concerts that featured her. Belyakin portrayed the actress in a dressing room preparing for the performance based on the play ‘Vassa Zheleznova’ by Maxim Gorky. Tomina played the part of Rachelle — the main character’s 30-year-old daughter-in-law.
Yuliya Tomina was born in 1931 in the Ryabinovka village of the Rasskazovsky district. In 1932, her family moved to Tambov. Tomina successfully graduated from high school, and in 1947, she was accepted to the preschool department of the Tambov Pedagogical School. After graduating with distinctions, she was allocated to work in the Sverdlovsk Oblast.

In 1969, Tomina was awarded the Certificate of Merit of the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR and the Republican Committee of the Trade Union of Education Workers of Higher Education and Scientific Institutions of the RSFSR for her achievements in the field of upbringing and education.
Apart from working as a teacher, Tomina became an actress playing in over 50 performances at the local theater as part of an amateur troupe. In 1951, she got a part of a student Masha in the production called “To the Young”, and in 1967 she played Antonina Monastyrskaya in the play “Alive Forever” by the Russian dramatist Viktor Rozov. Then came the roles in the performances “Ringing the Doorbell of the Empty Apartment” in 1969 and “Just Three Days” in 1973. Later, in 1998, Tomina played a teacher Anna Pavlovna in the production “Dandelion”.
In 2005, Tomina celebrated the 45th anniversary of her acting career on the stage of the Alexander Baturov People’s Theater.
