Kurnakov Andrei Ilyich
Portrait of art critic I.A. Krugly
#2
The name of Igor Aronovich Krugly is closely connected with the name of the artist Andrei Ilyich Kurnakov. Among the numerous monographs and albums by Igor Aronovich on the problems of Russian pre-revolutionary, Soviet and contemporary art, publications about our famous compatriot artist received special fame. These books were awarded with diplomas and prizes of the Russian Academy of Arts, the Russian Artists Association.

In the portrait of his friend, Soviet and Russian art critic Igor Aronovich Krugly, Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR, Associate Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, presented in the exhibition of the Art Gallery, Andrei Ilyich Kurnakov expressed deep sympathy for him. Depicting Igor Aronovich in his creative workshop, among his own works, the artist still pays attention not to the interior and setting, but to the main character and the dear guest. The artist elaborately draws out facial features, painstakingly depicts every wrinkle to the smallest detail. Looking intently into wise and kind eyes, depicted through glasses with lenses in thick frames, the artist opens the soul of his hero to the viewer.

In front of Igor Aronovich, on an easel, there is one of Andrei Kurnakov’s paintings, which he, as a professional art critic, studies with interest with his attentive gaze. His posture is free, he stands, bending slightly to the right, leaning on the stand, his hands resting on a stretcher, he is smiling slyly and a little mockingly. Igor Aronovich is depicted as a middle-aged, gray-haired, but trimmed intellectual. He is dressed in a formal suit, but under the jacket the viewer can see not a shirt with a tie, but a black turtleneck. Such a combination, a favorite in the wardrobe of representatives of the “bohemian community”, gives charm and attractiveness to a creative person and emphasizes the informality of the atmosphere. The dark, highlighted monolithic figure contrasts with the light blue-gray background of the workshop walls.

A notebook and a pen in the hands of an art critic emphasize the readiness to transfer his impressions and comments about the picture he saw on the paper. The hands, like the face, are depicted with great care. The viewer, carefully looking at the canvas, has the illusion of direct contact, through the space of the canvas he responds to the gaze of this intelligent and perceptive person.

Till the end of his days, Igor Aronovich remained an active person, full of creative ideas and new projects. His whole life was devoted to art and is inextricably linked with the Oryol region.

The exposition of the Oryol Art Gallery presents another pictorial portrait of Igor Aronovich Krugly, created earlier, in 1976. This portrait is more intimate and at the same time more conventional. In the dark range of colors of the color scheme, the artist depicted Igor Aronovich at work. He sits in a chair in the room against the background of icons, carefully and thoughtfully studying one of them.
