Art gallery of A.I. Kurnakov opened on May 4, 2006. Andrei Ilyich Kurnakov (1916–2010) was People’s Artist of the USSR, member of the Russian Academy of Arts, laureate of the State Prize of the RSFSR named after I.E. Repin.
Andrei Ilyich donated his 115 paintings and drawings to the Oryol Museum of Fine Arts to create a gallery, and he himself took part in the placement of works in the exhibition. He found motives for his works in Oryol, in the boundless expanses of his native Oryol region surrounding the city, in the historical past and the spiritual heritage of great townmen, in the cultural life surrounding him, in the images of his contemporaries. The gallery’s exposition allows to get acquainted with all the genres that were subject to the artist: he was well known to the public as a portrait painter, landscape painter and master of still life.
