Nikolai Nikolaevich Morevsky was engaged in teaching, first at the Oryol, and then at the Yeletsk art schools for more than 30 years. He considered it necessary to raise in his students the ability to observe life in all its manifestations and to select the most characteristic and typical from the variety of phenomena. ‘The ability to see is a special artist’s talent, ’ he said, “you can look and see nothing”. Nikolai Nikolaevich strove to teach students “strong drawing”. By this he meant not just the correct transfer of form, but also the ability to grasp the structure of an object. Morevsky was a subtle landscape painter, a master of still life, portraits, genre paintings, his works breathe the joy of life, “love and joy of being” shines through in each of his works, reflecting the colorful diversity of the world. Nikolai Nikolaevich brought up more than a dozen Oryol artists, was the first teacher of Andrei Ilyich Kurnakov, one of his most talented students.
Andrei Ilyich recalled his first teacher as a modest, attentive, good-natured person who opened a path in art for him, and for which the artist was grateful to him all his life. After the closure of the art school, Nikolai Nikolaevich, with the help of his student Andrei Kurnakov, moved to Oryol. Andrei Ilyich organized an anniversary exhibition of his teacher in Oryol, helped financially, painted his portrait.
Morevsky is depicted sitting within doors of an art school, as evidenced by the sculpture and part of the painting. He gazes thoughtfully into the distance, a wise, elderly person who has seen a lot in his life. He is 85 years old, but his gaze is clear, intent, a little sly. He holds a winter hat in his hands, leans on a cane, dressed in a warm old-fashioned coat with fur collar and blue trousers. His posture tells us that, having entered the room, Nikolai Nikolaevich sat down to rest for a while and observe the students. Until his last days, he lived for his work, he liked the atmosphere of creativity that ruled in the educational institution.
The picture’s color is soft, calm, restrained, in pearl-silver tones. An emerald scarf sets off the artist’s pale face, gray hair, and the red seat lining enlivens the composition.
