After returning to his homeland, Osipov taught at the Yakut art school, traveled a lot around the republic, for many years headed the Union of Artists of Yakutia, and organized exhibitions. He painted pictures of large construction sites in the republic, landscapes, as well as portraits of his countrymen, such as ordinary people and outstanding contemporaries.
On the painting from the exhibition “Art World of Afanasy Osipov”, the artist depicted Evenk Evdokia Sleptsova. She is a Knight of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and winner of the State Prize of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in the field of agriculture. The people called her “Dolguncha”. She was a successful hunter, a sharpshooter, and at the same time perfectly mastered the skills of traditional dressing and sewing of fur and leather products. One costume made by a craftswoman is kept in the Russian Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg. Contemporaries remember Dolguncha as good man of heart knowing and honoring her national culture in all its manifestations.
In the portrait of Evdokia Sleptsova, the emphasis is placed on traditional attire. It was customary for women of the Northern peoples to embroider their own clothes, and each symbol in the ornament has its own meaning. A traditional apron is visible under the caftan. It is usually tied with strong laces at the neck and waist. To the lower half of the apron, women sewed amulets and various kinds of jewelry, including copper bells, rings, and fur tassels.
Afanasy Osipov painted the portrait in 2000. While traveling in the North of Yakutia, he could stay alone with nature for a long time and live in a tent, thus working in the open air.
