The National Art Museum of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) features the works of the Yakut painter Afanasy Osipov. He was born in the Yakut village where he graduated from school and technical school, and then went to Moscow to study painting. 10 years later, he returned to his homeland where he taught painting, organized exhibitions, and painted.
Painting ‘Portrait of D.K. Sivtsev - Suorun Omolloon’ by artist Afanasy Osipov was made in 1973 and is dedicated to the outstanding representative of the creative intelligentsia of Yakutia, i.e. a major public figure, writer, poet, folklorist and playwright Dmitry Kononovich Sivtsev. In his homeland and throughout Russia, Dmitry Sivtsev is also known by his Yakut name Suorun Omolloon. In the lands of the Tattinsky Ulus where Suorun Omolloon was born, many classics of Yakut national fiction were born. As a child, he was lucky enough to live in the same yurt with the guides of folk knowledge, the olonkhosut storytellers, and when he got older, he was a student of the founder of Yakut literature Alexey Kulakovsky.
Suorun Omolloon wrote the story ‘Lena River’, the comedy ‘Lie-Abed’, the dramas ‘Blacksmith Kyukyur’ and ‘Saisary’, the tragedy ‘Ayaal’, the libretto for the operas ‘Nyurgun Bootur’, ‘Red Shaman’, ‘Lookut and Nyurgusun’, works of folklore and local history, as well as fairy tales for children. He also became the author of textbooks on the Yakut language and literature. The name of Suorun Omolloon was given to the Yakut State Opera and Ballet Theater.
Afanasy Osipov depicted the writer sitting under the crown of a tree against the backdrop of the majestic Tuimaada Valley. Colors of his clothing echoes the colors of the outside world. Earthy-green shirt echoes the color of the leaves of ancient trees and vegetation in the valley, and grey-blue, slate color trousers echoes shaded parts of the bark and the hills in a grey mist.
This portrait served as the basis for creating one of the parts of the group portrait ‘People’s Writers of Yakutia: N.E. Mordinov - Amma Achchygyya, V.M. Novikov - Kyunnyuk Urastyrov, S R. Kulachikov - Elley, D.K. Sivtsev - Suorun Omolloon’ painted by Afanasy Osipov in 1974.
