Bow saw, wooden, with a metal saw, handmade. Designed for longitudinal sawing. It consists of a beam and a metal saw blade stretched in it. The bow consists of two struts, a spacer, two handles and a tension bowstring. The vertical saw posts in the center are connected by a fixed wooden bar.
The beam saw was manufactured and used in the 1930s-1940s in logging operations.
The blade for a bow saw is often a thin strip of tool steel with a slight “serration”. The greater the width of the blade-web, the lower the maneuverability of the entire saw, and the tension force in the clamps is lower.
Any bow-type saw has a bowstring, which brings it even closer to the throwing weapons of ancient times. However, the purpose of such a bowstring is absolutely peaceful — it is necessary for a strong and reliable tension of the web between the handles. The bowstring is created from natural materials, for example, linen rope or hemp twine. Synthetic materials did not justify themselves. The indicators of their elasticity and durability are insufficient for cutting massive timber.
On the axis of central symmetry, in the gap between the centerpiece and the bowstring, there is an auxiliary arrow bar. During the rotation of this part, the tension of the hemp or linen bowstring occurs, as a result of which the hacksaw blade freezes firmly between the handles.
The threaded fastening of the handles and the reliable design make the performance of such a saw very high for short and long saws, as well as for sawing timber along and across the fibers. The bow saw can overcome knots and cut along radii and curved patterns.
