The author of the painting from the museum collection, Pavel Veselkin, an artist from the Chaplyginsky district of the Lipetsk region. In his work, he focuses on such masters of painting as Konstantin Korovin and Nikolay Feshin. Veselkin is also the author of a series of paintings ‘Journey to the Tyan Shan’ and a gallery of portraits of his famous fellow countrymen.
In 2019, the Museum-Estate of Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky hosted a personal exhibition of Pavel Veselkin entitled ‘Tyan-Shan Melody’. It exhibited works made by the artist during his creative trip to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, to the places of glory of the traveler. Pyotr Semyonov is considered a pioneer in the study of the Tyan Shan, a mountain system located in Central Asia. For the discoveries made in this region, he received an honorary prefix to the surname — Tyan-Shansky.
During the preparation for the exhibition, Pavel Veselkin painted a number of landscapes of the manor park and the surroundings of the estate museum. One of these works was later donated to the museum. In it, the artist depicted the Zerkaly ravine, a place that became the starting point in the fate of Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky. It was during children’s trips to this ravine that the future scientist’s interest in studying nature first arose. .
Later, the Zerkaly ravine became a place for geological research by Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky and his son Veniamin, he wrote several works on the geological structure of this area adjacent to the family estates of the family. Also, the ravine was a favorite place of the scientist’s daughter Olga, who became an artist and dedicated more than one picture to her native landscapes.
