Luigi Loir was born in Austria. After moving to Parma with his parents, he began studying painting at the local Academy of Arts in 1853. In 1865, the artist went to Paris and successfully debuted at the Salon. Loir started working as a decorator and a master of plafond paintings. Many of his works were purchased by the city administration and major European museums. Luigi Loir received many awards, including the Grand Prize of the Exposition Universelle in 1889. A year earlier, he was awarded the National Order of the Legion of Honor. In the early 1870s, Loir started to paint Parisian views, which brought him success. He was even chosen as “the painter of Parisian boulevards”. In his Parisian landscapes, Loir tried to capture various city views at different times of day. The artist researched the particular characteristics of light in different weather conditions: he liked to paint clouds, rain, fog under electric light, twilight, and sun reflections on bright days. This painting from the Museum collection belongs to this series. The influence of impressionists is clear in his Parisian views with their tonal range.
