The item on display in the hall “Rus and Horde: 14th Century Warfare” of the State Museum-Reserve “Kulikovo Field”, is a replica of a quiver loop. Like the original, it is made from bone and has the shape of an oblong rail, in the form of an elongated trapezoid, with a sharp edge at the top, decorated along the upper edge with a circular ornament. Five mounting holes have been drilled along the lower edge of the loop, and one, with a larger diameter, has been drilled at the top. It serves to suspend the quiver from the quiver belt.

Since childhood, nomadic warriors were accustomed to two things: riding horses and archery. Long-range archery was the main tactic of nomadic warriors.

The displayed item is a replica of the bone loop that was used to hold arrow cases. Various types of bone overlays on cases for arrows and bows reinforced the structure and served as decoration.

The loop is further decorated with a circular ornament, known as a “running wave” among art historians. In the urban setting of the Golden Horde bone-cutters in the 14th century, a separate artistic movement emerged — the ornamentation of arrow cases. Bone cases were adorned with various geometric shapes or scenes, with hunting scenes being a common choice. The recesses between these scenes were filled with colored pastes, often red, green, or brown.

In the Golden Horde, bone-cutting was a highly developed industry with a variety of techniques, including lathe processing, sawing, cutting, circular ornamentation, engraving, and polishing. Bone-cutting workshops are found on Tsarevskoe, Selitrennoe and Bolgarskoe ancient town sites. These skills were used to create a wide range of items, including buckles, linings, plates, patches, badges, buttons, beads, rings, amulets, combs, handles, sleeves and backs of knives; “whistling” attachments to iron arrowheads were also made from bone, as were parts of bows, fasteners of horse fetters, etc.

Arrow cases decorated in a similar style were widespread from the Balkans to the Baikal region, their bone fragments occasionally found in ancient Russian towns, among other places.
