The displayed signet belonged to Alexander Ivanovich Herzen. Its handle is shaped like the bust of the poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller who was admired and often quoted by the young Alexander Herzen and his friend Nikolay Ogarev. “The characters of his dramas were living persons for us; we analyzed them, loved, and hated them, not as poetic creations but as living men. Moreover, we saw ourselves in them,” the writer recalled in his autobiography “My Past and Thoughts”.

In his “Notes of a Young Man”, Alexander Herzen spoke about the German poet in an even more detailed and emotional manner,

Schiller, I bless you: to you am I indebted for the holy moments of my early youth. How many tears flowed from my eyes over your poems! What an altar I erected to you in my soul! You are preeminently the poet of youth. The same visionary gaze bent solely on the future — ‘There, there! ’ — the same generous, captivating, vigorous emotions; the same love of human beings and the same affinity for what is novel… Having once taken Schiller in my hands I could not relinquish him and now, in moments of sorrow, his pure and simple song is my remedy.” Later, Alexander Herzen advised his children to read and reread Schiller’s works, saying, “Good books grow along with us.”

The signet was modeled after the bust of Friedrich Schiller designed by the famous German sculptor Johann Heinrich von Dannecker. The original bust is kept at the Library of Weimar. In the 19th century, such signets were used to seal letters with the help of sealing wax. They usually featured the owner’s initials or coat of arms. This Schiller signet bears Alexander Herzen’s monogram “АГ” (AH) at the bottom. The writer used this signet when he lived in the house on Sivtsev Vrazhek Lane in Moscow.

This Empire-style mansion with a mezzanine was constructed near Arbat and Prechistenka in the 1820s. It was the third property of the writer’s father Ivan Yakovlev. He bought it for his son from General Sergey Tuchkov in 1839. The writer and his family moved into the so-called “Tuchkov house” in September 1843 and lived there until they emigrated in January 1847.

After Alexander Herzen left Russia, the signet was kept by his stepbrother Yegor Ivanovich Herzen.
