The stamp box entered the Herzen Museum in 1992. It was a gift from the writer’s great-grandson Serge Herzen and his wife Marie, who lived in Switzerland. Alexander Herzen always corresponded extensively, therefore writing instruments were important to him. The State Museum of the History of Russian Literature also keeps blotters for papers and letters that belonged to Alexander Herzen and his wife Natalya Alexandrovna.

Postage stamps appeared in Russia only in 1857. They had been introduced earlier in Europe: in 1843 in Switzerland and in 1849 — in France. These milestones coincided with the trips abroad that Herzen took with his family, which soon turned into exile. Before the advent of stamps, envelopes, both for private and official correspondence, were glued and sealed with wafers — paper circles soaked in glue.

Wafers were mentioned by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin in “Eugene Onegin”,

By turns Tatiana sighs and ohs. The letter trembles in her hand; the pink wafer dries on her fevered tongue.

Many state bodies, such as courts, post offices, and various ministries, had their own wafers. In the 19th century, enthusiasts even began to collect them, for example, the English naturalist and traveler Charles Darwin.

In Russia, wafers appeared in the 1690s. However, they gained popularity only in the second half of the 18th century, when they began to be used in private correspondence. Both postage stamps and the boxes for storing them were introduced in the 1840s, but the latter became widespread only in the second half of the 19th century. Such boxes and caskets were made of metal and precious woods and decorated with onlays of precious metals, ivory, and semiprecious stones. Some jewelers developed special sketches following the wishes of their clients who were looking to adorn their everyday lives, come up with a gift for someone, or create a collector’s item. The State Museum of the History of Russian Literature houses an elegant stamp box that belonged to Herzen — it was made in 1859 from silver, embellished with gilding and niello.
