Elena Fedorova
The Fern in Bloom
#7
The artist Elena Fedorova was born in Sverdlovsk. Her parents moved there from the Moscow region for the postgraduate work assignment. Since childhood, she loved drawing and studied in the art studio at the Pioneer youth club.

After missing the entrance exams at the Sverdlovsk Art School named after Shadr, Elena Evgenyevna entered the Culinary college. After a while, she became interested in painting again. She got a job as an art teacher in one of the secondary schools of Sverdlovsk while studying at the evening Art School named after Pavel Khozhatelev.

Nowadays, the artist lives in Yekaterinburg, heads an art studio in the children’s club ‘Sparkle’ and teaches at her private studio.

In her graphics, Elena Evgenyevna often refers to folklore, in particular to Russian traditional epic stories about supernatural forces that live around people and sometimes come and contact them. The artist’s characters are often witches, swamp and house spirits.

The work ‘The Fern in Bloom’ is included in the series of author’s monotypes of 2011 ‘Old Lady’s Fairy Tales’. Elena Fedorova depicted her version of the mythical plot about a fern that blooms for just one moment on the night before the holiday of St. John the Baptist, and about the evil spirit that is looking for this flower.

Monotyping is a type of graphic art in which the artist applies paint or ink to metal, glass, wooden, or plastic surface. Later the artist uses it to make prints on wet paper, cardboard or canvas. Only one bright print can be obtained from one surface, the second one will be pale. Works performed in this technique are characterized by blurred lines and soft color blending.

On a bright blue background, the artist depicted a large skeleton-like figure. It stands near its companion — a bear resembling a plush toy — stricken with awe in front of the blooming fern.

Legend has it that the magic flower opens treasures and gives power over evil spirits. Its strength is indicated by the contrasting red color. The overall color scheme of the picture, consisting of white, blue, and many shades of lilac, emphasizes the mystical atmosphere of the setting.
