Yuri Voloshin
Autumn. Farewell
#9
The artist Yuri Voloshin was born in 1962 in the village of Svetly, Orenburg region. Yuri began drawing and sculpting figurines as a child, and he received his first lessons in woodcarving from his uncle, a cabinetmaker.

After school, he entered the Bobrov School of Arts and Industry in the city of Aramil, where he studied woodcarving. At the same time, he attended classes at the studio of the Sverdlovsk House of Pioneers. From 1981 to 1983, he studied at the Sverdlovsk Art Schoolnamed after Shadr. Voloshin lived in Leningrad, in Tula, in his native village of Svetly and all this time he continued studying painting and sculpture.

Voloshin reminisced about this time,

…I lived with my family in the Orenburg region, worked as a school teacher and went out to paint studies to the steppe. There I collected various beautiful stones and brought them home. I made a mosaic out of them, fastening the stones with plaster.

In the composition ‘Autumn. Farewell’, Yuri Voloshin depicted a small rodent that catches the last rays of the sun before winter. The artist has well studied the habits of forest inhabitants, their anatomical features. In his works, he successfully combines them with the texture and properties of wood.

In addition, Voloshin uses an unusual technique in his work. He combined incompatible materials in one work. This idea came to him when he was working with a birch growth, a sharp thickening of the trunk of a tree, and noticed that it resembled a stone in hardness, and after processing, it became similar to marble.

Voloshin began to add different materials to the figures made of wood: stones, metal, and others. They make the surface look more natural. Such ‘natural’ details are well combined with simple and laconic forms of animals.

Voloshin made the rodent figurine from the exhibition from a single piece of wood. He created the image of the animal with the help of the wood texture, which he emphasized by toning. This enhances the impression that a well-fed and very plump rodent, who is ready for the winter cold, has a shiny fur. The glossy soft wood texture makes a contrast to the rusty piece of metal on which the rodent stands.
