Postcards, Gagra

Postcards with views of the Gagra resort were issued as an advertisement for the first Russian health resort, the so-called ‘Russian Riviera’. They depicted views of the embankment, the hotel, the restaurant, the palace that belonged to Prince Alexander of Oldenburg, seascapes and promenade boulevards.

The Gagra climatic resort became the favorite pet project of Prince Alexander of Oldenburg. In 1899, he visited the Black Sea province for the first time. His companion on this trip was the Minister of Railways, Prince Mikhail Khilkov. The purpose of the visit was to study the possibilities of laying the Black Sea railway there. Having passed all the coasts, the prince lingered in Gagra, which had been abandoned by that time. Writer Alexander Bestuzhev-Marlinsky described that place as follows:

‘There is a cavity between huge mountains on the Black Sea coast, in Abkhazia. The wind does not fly there; the heat from hot rocks is unbearable, and, to top off the pleasure, the stream dries up and turns into a fetid puddle. In this gorge, a small fortress was built, which enemies beat from all their heights through the windows; where the fever rages to the point that one and a half groups from the garrison dies every year, and the rest just come out of there with deadly obstructions or dropsy. The 5th Black Sea battalion is placed there, which can only communicate with other places by sea, and, having no land for pastures, feeds on rotten corned beef all year round. In a word, the name of Gagra in Georgia, which the most disastrous for Russians, means a death sentence’.

The Prince of Oldenburg decided to ennoble that place and create a sea health resort there. The Gagra resort was built in just over two years. A luxurious subtropical park with exotic trees, ponds, and sculptures was laid out by the sea. A hydropathic establishment with English marble baths appeared on the slope of the mountain, and mansions, shops, restaurants, a pier, a telegraph and postal service were built in the city. One of the most beautiful buildings was the Gagripsh restaurant opposite the Primorsky Park - a three-story wooden building with a large clock on the pediment. According to legend, the Prince of Oldenburg acquired this building at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1902. The whole structure was delivered to Gagra in parts and assembled on the spot without a single nail.
