The museum’s collection includes a postcard depicting the Sorokinsky Pond, published by the “Printing Agent in Moscow.”
Sorokinsky Pond is located near the house that the
family of Arkady Petrovich Golikov, the future writer Arkady Gaidar, rented in
the town of Arzamas. The boys used to play there. Their “naval battles” were
later described by Arkady Gaidar in his autobiographical novel The School,
We were let out for the summer holidays. Fedka and I made all sorts of plans for the summer. There was a lot of work ahead. First, we needed to build a raft, launch it in the pond adjacent to our garden, declare ourselves rulers of the sea and engage in a naval battle with the combined fleet of the Pantyushkin and Simakov boys, who guarded the approaches to their gardens on the other shore.
Viktor Mikhailovich Ryabov, a childhood friend of Arkady Golikov, who was a grade younger than him, recalled,
I was among the other younger boys who were constantly hanging around Golikov. He was our leader and protector. Arkady often accompanied us, the little ones, on walks to the woods (as we called the birch grove on the outskirts of Arzamas), and on outings to go swimming. With him, we always felt safe. In his presence, the older and more aggressive boys wouldn’t bother us. Besides, it was always interesting to be with him.
“Apparently he read a lot, because later, as an adult, I found familiar things in books and remembered his stories. He didn’t allow us to bully the little ones or girls. He never used force against them but could say or mock something in such a way that it completely took away any desire to misbehave,” Viktor Ryabov recalled.
