The museum holds a photograph from the archive of the Gaidar family. It was donated to the museum’s collection by Ariadna Pavlovna Bazhova-Gaidar, the widow of the writer’s son, in 2006.

Arkady Petrovich Gaidar was very fond of his son and played an important role in his life: Timur Arkadyevich followed in his father’s footsteps. He first connected his life with the Navy, and later became a journalist and writer.

In 1988, Timur Gaidar’s book “Golikov Arkady from Arzamas” was published, which included personal memories of his father and the results of his extensive research on the life and work of Arkady Petrovich Gaidar as a soldier, journalist, and writer.

In December 1926, when Timur was born in Arkhangelsk, Arkady Petrovich was in Perm, where he worked as a journalist. He sent a telegram,

Name the son Timur.

The choice of name was likely influenced by Arkady Gaidar’s recent journey through Central Asia. “Timur Gaidar, there’s a fire all around, don’t climb through the window, don’t misbehave,” read one of his telegrams from that time.

The writer arrived in Arkhangelsk in November 1928. He began writing articles and feuilletons for the newspaper “Volna.” Gaidar’s financial report was kept in the archives of the newspaper for a long time, where, in addition to the usual items of expenses, transportation and daily allowances, it was recorded,

Lost to the rafters at cards …

When asked about this by the accountant, Arkady Petrovich replied,

These are production costs, in order to write a good piece, I had to join the brigade. To avoid standing out, I had to play cards. I’m a poor player, so naturally, I lost. I consider compensation a matter of principle!

Timur Gaidar learned this story from the memories of people who knew his father. According to his recollections, even when Timur was very young, Arkady Petrovich easily coped with his whims. When little Timur, upset about something, “habitually threw himself on the floor and began pounding it with his hands and feet, ” his father “ushered his mother out of the room, closed the door, sat on a stool, and watched my actions with a calm and friendly interest. Noticing that I was getting tired, he suggested, ‘Hit with purpose. Start with your legs, then your hands. Or better yet, like this: right hand and left leg. Then switch. Alternately. Got it? Okay, let’s try! ’
