The sculptor Vladimir Lugovykh worked all his life as a locksmith at the Sverdlovsk Plastics plant. The artist tried to create the first works from metal, for some time he was into coining. About this period, he reminisced, ‘I didn’t like coining. It’s time-consuming; the material is cold, slippery.’
Vladimir Ivanovich became interested in woodcarving later and from that time he worked only with this material.
He found themes for his reliefs and sculptures in folk and author’s fairy tales, folk epos, Slavic mythology, in proverbs and sayings. While reading books, he tried to choose publications without illustrations in order to invent them himself.
Vladimir Lugovykh had works made of wood, in which he resorted to minimal processing. The artist found characters or scenes in various gnarled parts of trees, trunk stumps, and small stubs. He slightly processed the surface, gave it the desired shape. So the basis of the tree adjacent to the root, gnarled parts, and growths on the tree trunks turned into a squinting wood spirit, an unusual vase, or an entire plot composition.
