The museum exhibits a replica of the field dress kit of an adjutant general of the Imperial Russian Army Russian at the times of World War I. This was precisely the rank of one of the grand dukes, Sergei Mikhailovich, the grandson of Nicholas I of Russia. Before the revolution, an adjutant general would be kitted out in a single-breasted tunic of the year 1907 design, officer’s parade scarf, a greatcoat with artillery collar patches, and a khaki cap to complete the outfit as headgear. The tunic was trimmed with an adjutant aiguillette and adjutant general’s shoulder boards. Field pants with a triple braid on the side would be tucked into tall boots.

Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich was born in 1869 in the Caucasus. Like all other members of the royal family, he received excellent education. The sons in the family of his father, Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich, of Russia, were raised with harsh discipline. All male children in the family were prepared for military service and taught to handle bladed weapons and firearms.
The Duke was fond of travelling, and in 1890, together with his brother he set sail on the royal yacht “Tamara”. From the Crimean Sevastopol, the brothers headed towards the Indian ocean, made it to Bombay in India. This was where the voyage was interrupted by the unexpected death of the Dukes’ mother and they made it hastily home to Russia.

The Grand Duke was a friend of Emperor Nicolas II and frequented the Headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief. After the revolution, Sergei Mikhailovich was dismissed from the Army and lived privately in Petrograd. He refused to leave Russia and said that everything that was then happening in Russia was a ‘terrible mistake’.
In March 1918, the Grand Duke was exiled from Petrograd with other Romanov family members. In July of the same year Sergei Mikhailovich was murdered at the age of 49.
