Kharlampy Dmitrievich Kostandi was a landscape painter and graphic artist.
The picture “Night at the Baydar Gates” is a vivid example of a romantic landscape painting. The Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore handed it over in 1999. In 2006, the painting was restored at the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia by the restorer Alexander Ivanovich Bayer.
The painting features a view at the Baydar Gate in Crimea. The artist rendered the panorama in the dark. The moon is reflected on the calm surface of the sea, creating a moonlit path. The mountains with thick vegetation surround the water area. The Foros Church is on the steep Red Rock, at an altitude of 412 meters above sea level.
Foros is a settlement founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC. In 1887, the merchant, industrialist and philanthropist Alexander Grigoryevich Kuznetsov bought a plot of land where the Church of the Resurrection of Christ was to be erected later. It was commissioned to commemorate the miraculous survival of the Russian royal family in a train wreck on October 17, 1888.
The project was prepared by the architect Nikolai Mikhailovich Chagin; the famous artists Makovsky, Korzukhin and Sverchkov painted the interior of the temple, and the mosaic decoration was made by Italian craftsmen. The construction was over in 1892. The temple was consecrated on October 4, 1892. Pavel Undolsky was the first priest to head the parish.
Due to its unusual location, the church was included as a landmark on nautical charts. Alexander Grigoryevich Kuznetsov, the largest tea merchant in Russia, began to use the image of the Foros Church as a brand name on tin boxes with his products.
During the Great Patriotic War, Foros border guard detachment under the command of Senior Lieutenant Alexander Stepanovich Terletsky, who repelled the onslaught of the Nazis, took refuge in the temple. The temple was under attack, its outer walls were damaged by bullets and shells.
The Foros Church is one of the main landmarks of the southern coast of Crimea.
