The Murmansk Regional Art Museum is located in the historical center of Murmansk, on Kominterna Street, in the very first public stone building of the city.
This building of the Transport Consumer Society was built in 1927. At that time, Kominterna Street was a road with log cabins on the sides. The three-story stone building stood out among them. And it became somewhat of a center of Murmansk: there was a department store on the first and second floors, and a dining room on the third.
On January 29, 1987, the Murmansk City Executive Committee of People’s Deputies decided to transfer the building to the Department of Culture.
On December 19, 1989, the first specialized exhibition hall was opened in Murmansk. This event was timed to coincide with the 7th regional “The Soviet North”.
On January 17, 1990, the exhibition hall was transformed into the Murmansk Regional Art Museum. And at the same time, paintings, graphic works, sculptures, and objects of arts and crafts from the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore were transferred to its funds.
As of January 1, 2022, the museum houses more than 12,000 items. There are numerous paintings dating from the 17th to the 21st centuries, and a substantial collection of graphics, including the graphics by Leningrad artists. The input of Murmansk artists is a significant part of the collection. The section of decorative and applied art displays samples of Russian crafts.
